Tucson Trends: February, 2015

(Part One)

We are back from our amazing Tucson Gem Show buying trip.  For those of you who live under a rock (or don’t live in Arizona), the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show is the largest gem and mineral show in the world.  It’s actually a conglomeration of more than ten large shows and an unknowable number or tiny shows, all of which happen during the same two week period every February.  Tucson is completely run over by crazy bead and gem enthusiasts, and vendors come from six continents to share their goodies.  Every year, the buying team from Bead World drives down to Tucson, loads up on the very best stuff we can find and brings is all home to you!  We also like to do a fun summary of the show for y’all!

Pulling up to the show, it looks like any other convention center, but inside…

…it looks a little more like THIS!  Beads, everywhere you turn!

Okay, hot trends we noticed this show:

Solar Quartz: We saw this stuff everywhere!  The distinctive bulls eye pattern of solar quartz makes it perfect for sliced pendants.  We saw it in natural shades or dyed, like these beautiful earrings from Bollywood Beads.  (We loved these guys, and hope to do a trunk show with them later in the year.)

Opal: This has been a growing trend over the last four shows, but it really reached a crescendo this time.  Just wait until you see the AH-MAY-ZING opals we brought home for you!  The most lustrous, sparkling, gorgeous… You won’t believe it until you see it.  Thank you to Rishabh (in the Holidome) for letting us share a picture of their wonderful opal necklace!

Cut of the Show: Fat Rondelles  Every show, we notice a cut that is EVERYWHERE!  (Like September’s amazing German cut slices, or last February’s faceted cubes.)  This time, we saw wonderful large scale fat rondelles all over the place.  These juicy goodies were especially well showcased with high end gems.  Here’s a tip: ask to see the sapphires we brought back this time. O. M. G.

Colorful Chalcedony: I was thrilled to find the return of beautiful, colorful chalcedony!  In a range of colors that would make any Easter egg proud, these color-enhanced faceted drops fit right in with the color palette of the season.  The price is right, too.  You are going to LOVE these.  (Mmmm, I’m going to have to make a beachy necklace with all the blues and greens…)

Lava: Okay, lava stepped right out of it’s shell this show.  Not only did we find beautiful black lava at wonderful prices, but we found DYED lava in all kinds of crazy colors at almost every booth.  We passed on the wild stuff, sticking to our traditional black.  You’ll have to let us know… did we make a mistake by passing on this trend?

Druzy: Does it count as a trend when it’s popular at every show?!  Druzy shows no sign of slowing down.  It is as hot, hot, hot as ever.  We picked up lots of the pretty, natural stuff in bead, pendant and link form.  And we got some of the crazy stuff, too.  We know y’all love it!

Pink!: Pink was EVERYWHERE this show!  With “strawberry ice” as a standout color this season, it’s no surprise that we found wonderful pink stones at every single booth.  From pink Peruvian opal to rhodonite, rhodocrosite to rose quartz, pink chalcedony to pink sapphires.  And the Indian rubies… just you wait until you see those rubies!

Next week, I’ll show you the highlights of our purchases — the very best of the very best!
