Gemstone of the Month: Peridot

Peridot, correctly pronounced pear-uh-doh, is the birthstone for the month of August. The brilliant citrus green version of olivine, peridot has been held precious since long before the Roman era. In fact, Cleopatra’s famous emeralds were probably spectacular peridots mined from Zegberget Island, a tiny island off the coast of Egypt. The Romans called peridot “evening emerald,” as peridot doesn’t change color even in artificial lamp light.

The lore surrounding the wearing of fine peridot is rich and varied. Pirates are said to have worn peridot rings to protect them from treachery on the high seas, while religious artifacts and medieval cathedrals were decorated with spectacular examples. Peridots are said to heal turbulent emotions ranging from hurt feelings to a violent rage, promoting peace and general good will toward all. They are also said to attract success and abundance to their wearer.
.
A volcanic gem, peridot is the only gemstone that exists in  only green form. It can range, however, from yellow-ish green to a brown-ish olive green. Today, most peridot beads come from Arizona, which is a rich provider of peridot of moderate quality. The best, and most expensive, peridot currently comes from the Kashmir region of Pakistan. Of course, the brightest, clearest greens are the most valuable. It’s important when wearing and caring for peridots to protect them from scratches and sharp blows, as they are somewhat fracture prone. Never clean peridot in an ultrasonic cleaner. Rather, wipe them clean with a soft, damp cloth.
