Three Strand Wire Crochet Necklace Tutorial

Three Strand Wire Crochet Necklace
This classic wire crochet necklace is easy to learn, quick to create and is easily customizable!  You can make all the strands the same length for a full, flirty look or graduate the strands (as shown) for a more mature, traditional look.  Vary the colors and materials of the beads, or the umber of strands, to make this look totally your own.
Required Materials:
  • 28 gauge craft wire on the spool
  • 16 inch strand of freshwater pearls
  • 4mm Swarovski bicone crystals, color A (28)
  • 4mm Swarovski bicone crystals, color B (28)
  • Toggle clasp
  • Crochet hook (G or H)
  • Wire cutters
  • GS Hypo Glue (red)

Divide your beads into three equal piles.

Each pile will be used for one strand of your three strand necklace.  String the first pile of beads onto the spool of 28 gauge wire, alternating pearls and crystals.  Keep the wire on the spool and DO NOT cut the wire off!

Leaving a three inch tail, form a loop at the end of the 28 gauge wire.

Pull the spool end of the wire through the loop, forming a slip knot.

Pass the crochet hook through the slip knot.

Wrap the spool end of the wire in your non-dominant hand, holding the three inch tail between your thumb and middle finger.  Hold the hook in your dominant hand.  Wrap the spool end of the wire around the crochet hook.

Twist the crochet hook, catching the wire on the hook, and pull it through the loop.

This is one chain stitch.  Keep the stitches loose enough to easily slide over the crochet hook.  Remember, wire doesn’t stretch like yarn.  Slide a bead up the wire.

Twist the crochet hook, catching the wire on the hook, and pull it through the loop. The bead will be captured in the chain stitch.  Continue working chain stitches, sliding a bead up for every other chain stitch,

When you reach the desired length (usually 18 to 20 inches), cut the wire off about 3 inches away from the chain.  Pass the wire through the last stitch.

Pull the wire tight to secure the stitch.
Repeat the process for strands two and three.
You are now ready to add your clasp.  Arrange your three strands in the manner you desire.  Twist the ends together to form one tight strand of wire.

Pass the twisted strands of wire through the loop on your toggle bar.

Double the wire back and twist it tightly to secure the toggle bar to your chains.

Trim off any excess wire and tap the ends down firmly with needle nose pliers.  Add a dab of GS Hypo glue (red) to the end to secure the wire.  Repeat steps 15-18 on the other side to secure your toggle ring.
