Netted Ornament Tutorial

Don’t you just love the beauty of a fully decorated tree?  There’s something so magical about coming home each day and seeing your tree covered in ornaments and lights.  While every tree is gorgeous, the most beautiful Christmas tree I’ve ever seen was decorated entirely with handmade ornaments.  It was stunning!!  Try adding a few handmade ornaments to your tree this year with our Netted Ornament Tutorial.  We made our ornament using red, green, & crystal, but you can use any colors you’d like!

You will need:

4mm Czech firepolish, color A (72)

4mm Czech firepolish, color B (16)

6mm Czech firepolish (8)

1/4″ Bugle beads, color C (112)

1/4″ Bugle beads, color D (32)

Size 11 seed beads

Fireline (15 feet)

Size 10 beading needle

Glass ball ornament (1)

1. String on three size 11 seed beads and one color A 4mm Czech bead, repeating this pattern eight times. Tie the strand around the neck of your glass ornament to make a loop.  You should have eight color A 4mm Czech glass beads in this loop.

2. Reinforce the loop by running through all the beads again, tying at least four knots between the beads.  After your final knot, emerge from the circle after a 4mm Czech bead.

3. String on seven size 11 seed beads, one color A 4mm Czech glass bead and another seven size 11 seed beads. Pass your needle through ONLY the next 4mm Czech glass bead on the circle.

4. Pull the thread tight to make a “finger”.

5. Repeat this process all the way around the circle to complete the first row.

6. Pass your needle through the seven size 11 seed beads of the very first “finger”.  Pass your needle through the 4mm Czech bead at the tip of the “finger”.

7. String on one size 11 seed bead, one color C bugle bead, one size 11 seed bead, one color A 4mm Czech glass bead, one size 11 seed bead, one color C bugle bead and one size 11 seed bead.

8. Pass your needle through ONLY the 4mm Czech bead at the tip of the “finger”.  Pull your thread tight to form a new “finger”. Repeat this process all the way around the circle to complete the second row.

9. Pass your needle through the seed bead, bugle bead and seed bead of the very first “finger” from this circle. Pass your needle through the 4mm Czech bead at the tip of the “finger”.

10. String on one size 11 seed bead, one color C bugle bead, one size 11 seed bead, one color A 4mm Czech glass bead, one size 11 seed bead, one color C bugle bead and one size 11 seed bead to start the third row.  Repeat the netting process all the way around the circle to complete the third row.

11. Using the same bead pattern as shown in step 9, repeat the netting process all the way around the circle to complete the fourth row.

12. String on one size 11 seed bead, one color C bugle bead, one size 11 seed bead, one color B 4mm Czech glass bead, one size 11 seed bead, one color C bugle bead and one size 11 seed bead to start the fifth row.  Repeat the netting process all the way around the circle to complete the fifth row.

13. At this point, it becomes necessary to work with your beading on the glass ornament.  String on one size 11 seed bead, one color D bugle bead, one size 11 seed bead, one 6mm Czech glass bead, one size 11 seed bead, one color D bugle bead and one size 11 seed bead to start the sixth row. Complete the row.

14. String on one size 11 seed bead, one color D bugle bead, one size 11 seed bead, one color B 4mm Czech glass bead, one size 11 seed bead, one color D bugle bead and one size 11 seed bead to start the seventh row.  Complete the row.

15. You have now completed the center band. String on one size 11 seed bead, one color C bugle bead, one size 11 seed bead, one color A 4mm Czech glass bead, one size 11 seed bead, one color C bugle bead and one size 11 seed bead to start the eighth row.  Complete the row.

16. Repeat step 10 for row 9.  Repeat step 9 for row 10.  Repeat step 8 for row 11.  String on seven size 11 seed beads, one color A 4mm Czech glass bead, and another seven size 11 seed beads.  Net row 12.

17. String on seven size 11 seed beads.  Holding the ornament upside down, gently work the ends of the netting toward the bottom of the ornament.  Pass your needle through ONLY the 4mm Czech bead at the end of the first finger. Continue the process all the way around the circle to complete the ring at the bottom of the ornament.  Reinforce the ring by passing through all of the beads in the circle a second time, tying off multiple times using the traditional technique.
