Natural Turquoise & Swarovski Crystal Spanish Crochet Bracelet Tutorial

spanish crochet bracelet small new

Wrapping up our Spanish Knot tutorial series is our Spanish Crochet Bracelet.  You can use any beads you’d like with this, but we loved the combination of the natural, earthy turquoise nuggets with the sparkly Swarovski crystal.  To complete this project, you’ll need to know how to do Wire CrochetSpanish Knots, and Intermediate Spanish Knots.  Make sure you check out these tutorials before you get started to help you be successful with this project!

.

You will need:

26 gauge bronze wire (6 feet)

Natural turquoise nuggets (14)

4mm Swarovski mocha bicones (14)

4mm Swarovski indicolite bicones (14)

1.5mm leather (7 feet)

Button (1)

GS Hypo Glue (Red)

Crochet hook (G or H preferred)

Wire cutters

Cutters for leather

Bead stopper

Bead mat

.

1. Put the Bead Stopper on the end of the 26 gauge wire.  String one turquoise nugget, one mocha crystal and one indicolite crystal onto the 26 gauge wire. Continue stringing in this pattern until all the beads are on the wire, ending with a turquoise nugget.

.

2. Leaving a three inch tail, form a loop at the end of the wire.  Pull the Bead Stopper end (the long end) of the wire through the loop, forming a slip knot.

013

.

3. Slide a turquoise nugget down the wire to the loop.

014

.

4. Pass the crochet hook through the slip knot.  Hold the Bead Stopper end of the wire in your non-dominant hand, also holding the three inch tail between your thumb and middle finger.  Hold the hook in your dominant hand.  Wrap the Bead Stopper end of the wire around the crochet hook just above the turquoise.

015

.

5. Twist the crochet hook, catching the wire on the hook, and pull it through the loop.

016

.

6. This is one stitch, and the turquoise is captured in the stitch.  Keep the stitches loose enough to easily slide over the crochet hook, but don’t let the stitches get too large.  Slide a crystal up the wire.

017

.

7. Continue working chain stitches, sliding a bead up for every chain stitch.  When you reach the desired length, cut the wire off about 3 inches away from the chain.  Do not tie off the crochet, as this makes it possible to remove beads if the bracelet is too long.  Approximate sizing: 11 turquoise and 22 crystals for 6 ½ to 7 inch wrist, 12 turquoise and 24 crystals for a 7 to 7 ½ inch wrist, 13 turquoise and 26 crystals for a 7 ½ to 8 inch wrist.  You can add additional button holes at the end of the bracelet if you need it to be longer or to add adjustability.

8. Put your button on your leather, half way down. Hold the leather under the button with your left thumb and finger.  Take right strand of leather and place it under the left strand.  Hold it with your right hand where it crosses, forming a 1 inch “D”.   Let go of the button for a second, while you flip the same strand of leather over the top of the center strand.  Again, hold it where it crosses under the button.

Step 8

.

9. Next, take the left strand of leather (still holding under the button with your left hand) and place it over the strand going out to the right.  Then go under and pass through the loop to the left, towards you.

Step 9

.

10. Pull until you have formed two 1 inch loops that look like a pretzel.  Still holding under the button pull each strand (left, then right) gradually reducing the size of the loops.  Just push and pull until it’s lightly in place.  The knot should be located ¼ inch down from the button.

.

11. Wrap the starting end of the crochet wire four times around both pieces of leather under the Spanish knot.  Trim off any excess wire and tap the ends down firmly with needle nose pliers.  Using GS Hypo Cement, glue down the end of the wire.

027

.

12. Take right strand of leather and place it under the left strand and the crocheted chain.  Hold it with your right hand where it crosses, forming a 1 inch “D”.

031

.

13. Flip the same strand of leather over the top of the center strand and the crocheted chain.  Again, hold it where it crosses.

032

.

14. Next, take the left strand of leather and place it over the strand going out to the right.  Then go under the crochet chain and pass through the loop to the left, towards you.

033

.

15. Pull until you have formed two 1 inch loops that look like a pretzel.  Pull each strand (left, then right) gradually reducing the size of the loops.  When the loops get to ¼ inch in size, pull on both strands at the same.  Push up on knot with right finger and thumb until knot closes over the wire wrap.

034

.

16. Take right strand of leather and place it under the left strand and the crocheted chain.  Hold it with your right hand where it crosses, forming a 1 inch “D”.

035

.

17. Flip the same strand of leather over the top of the center strand and the crocheted chain.  Again, hold it where it crosses.

036

.

18. Next, take the left strand of leather and place it over the strand going out to the right.  Then go under the crocheted chain and pass through the loop to the left, towards you.

037

.

19. Pull until you have formed two 1 inch loops that look like a pretzel.  Pull each strand (left, then right) gradually reducing the size of the loops.  When the loops get to ¼ inch in size, pull on both strands at the same.  Push up on knot with right finger and thumb until knot closes over the turquoise nugget.

038

.

20. Move down the crocheted chain and make another Spanish knot, repeating the directions in steps 16-19, until the knot closes around TWO crystals.

039

.

21. Continue tying Spanish knots until you reach your desired length.

049

.

22. Tie one Spanish knot, and then wrap the end of the crochet wire four times around both pieces of leather.

040

.

23. Tie a Spanish knot, working it up over the wire wrap.

041

.

24. Add a third Spanish knot.

042

.

25. Leave a space the same size as your button and tie a knot.

043

.

26. Then add a second Spanish knot.  If you choose, you can again leave a space the same size as your button and tie a knot.  This will make your bracelet adjustable. Complete the bracelet by putting GS Hypo Glue (Red) inside the end knots to keep them coming undone.

046

.

27. Cut off your excess leather about ¼ inch from the last knot.

047

.

28. The finished bracelet is shown below.

I hope you have lots of fun blending together wire crochet and Spanish knots!!
