Gemstones for Self-Care
2017 has been an interesting year, to say the least… I began this year with a commitment to myself. With a 3 year old child (who I stay home with a couple days each week), a husband who has a full-time job and is also working on his phD, 3 jobs (including a business of my own), general household duties, and my relationships with my husband/family/friends – the constant state of stress and insanity was at an all time high. I had spent far too long running, unconsciously jumping from one task to the next. There were a million thoughts racing through my mind at any given time and it was exhausting! I needed a break!! I vowed to let go of responsibilities that I didn’t need, cut down on my jobs, work smarter, release stressors that were no longer serving me, take care of my soul & my body, and basically start living more consciously. Little did I know how much of an undertaking that vow would be…
As we know, when we put something out into the universe, the universe responds!! Once I made that vow of self-care, I was suddenly provided with ample (and sometimes rather interesting) opportunities to follow through with my promise. What I thought was merely going to be a rational process of cutting back on commitments became something much larger. It was like I had been running for so long that when I finally gave my body & soul the opportunity to let go, the flood gates opened and I was confronted with everything I had been suppressing for years. Almost immediately my body completely gave out – I was exhausted, sick for months, and even ended up having an emergency surgery. My body latched onto the opportunity to halt, sleep, and regroup. It was like a healing crisis, and I had to take care of myself to get through it. Since then I’ve continued down my self-care journey, focusing on my physical health, emotional well-being, setting boundaries, finding a healthy level of commitments, happy relationships, and so much more. It has been very interesting to see all the self-care opportunities that have come up for me. Apparently I have a lot of work to do… I’m certainly not finished, but that’s ok! Taking care of myself is feeling really good!!
In talking with other customers and friends, I’ve realized that I’m not alone in this self-care journey. It seems to be a common theme of 2017, so let’s chat about some gemstones that can help us to love up on ourselves!! We might as well have some pretty jewelry to enhance our focus and act as a visual reminder of this path of self-care that we’re on.
Often, the first step of self-care is acknowledging that you’re worth it! We tend to put everyone else’s needs before our own, but we are just as worthy of having our needs met. I’m sure you’ve all heard the statement “you can’t pour from an empty cup”. We can’t (successfully) take care of anyone else’s needs if we are depleted, run-down, and empty. We have to fill up our cups first, and then decide if we’re able to help anyone else fill up theirs. Tiger’s Eye can be used to enhance self-worth and limit self-criticism, helping us begin our self-care journey.
Next, is self-awareness. Self-care can be tricky, because it means different things to different people. For one person it could be complete relaxation and for someone else it could be a really fun, high-energy night out with friends. Sometimes you even want different things on different days. Self-awareness can help us to realize where we are at the moment and what we need to do to take care of ourselves. To enhance self-awareness, enlightenment, and introspection: pull from Lapis Lazuli, Kunzite, and Labradorite.
After we have embraced our self-worth, and used self-awareness to determine our needs, this self-care journey takes a little bit of a different path for everyone. It depends on what you need and what will make your cup the most full. Here are gemstones for a few of the most common needs. Your needs may be different from these listed, and that’s OK!! SLEEP!!! I struggle with this one, but it’s true that our bodies need sleep to re-group. We can’t feel mentally sharp or emotionally stable on limited sleep, nor can we lose weight without it. I love Rose Quartz for general sleeplessness or Amethyst for sleeplessness caused by an overactive mind or recurrent nightmares.
Is excess stress wearing you down?? Try Amethyst, Aquamarine, and Moonstone to relieve stress, increase calm, and add emotional stability.
If general relaxation (think bubble baths, massages, meditation) seems most nourishing to your soul, reach for Smoky Quartz, Magnesite, and Topaz to add relaxation, grounding, stability, and serenity into your life!

Lastly, as you’re on this self-care journey you may find that there are some difficult emotions that come up as part of the experience. Be gentle with yourself and rely on Peridot, Rose Quartz, Magnesite, and Rhodonite to facilitate forgiveness of yourself and increase self-love.
